Chicago job listings? Why are they mostly up north? I am allways looking to better my financial situation, particularly how much I make working. Yet, whatever web sight government, stores, or web employment services I go into for the Chicago area; there are few or no jobs listed south and west, unless you want to drive for hours to get there. It seems to me, that with the price of gasoline, driving too far to work far from home is stupid and cost-prohibitive. I am not even going to consider applying for a job more than 15 miles away in the Chicago area. The reasons are many: 1) People need sleep. 2) Working far away takes up too much time spent in the car going to and from work. 3) Driving far causes stress during peak traffic times and is 4) harzardous to my health. So, why do the news papers all think we want to work near Wrigley Field in yuppie town? There's no where to park. It costs too much in travel expenses. Where are all the job listings for south and southwest Cook County? Why travel to Joliet, Shamburg, Deer Field, Aurora?

Is Indianapolis worth the hype? I've heard a lot of good things about Indianapolis - that's it's the fastest growing city in the Midwest after Chicago, that rent is cheap, and the economy is decent. The worst I've heard is that it's mediocre or boring. Is rent really that cheap? How bad really is Cabrini-Green these days? Hey y'all... I'll be moving to Chicago in about a month - I originally grew up in the burbs and then after graduating college (10 years ago), left Illinois and have been moving around the country for work. Now I am moving back to the city for a new job in the Loop. I was looking around at apt listings and found one that sounds great, but its in the area where Cabrini was once located (Division and Clybourn). When I was a kid we always heard that you shouldn't go into Cabrini after dark or possibly even at all. Does anyone out there live in this area now or has passed through there enough to let me know - is this place allright to live in now?? Moving from Chicago to LA -- which neighborhood, and am I crazy? Hey, so I live in Chicago -- I came here after college because at the time I was a dirt-poor, struggling freelance writer so it was the only big city I could afford. I'm doing much better now, but I've become somewhat bored. The brutal winter weather is wearing on me, and I'm itching for a radical change of scenery. My job allows me to live anywhere I want, so I'm thinking of finding a new city to settle in for a few years, and I'm thinking LA (alternative probably being New York). But I thought I'd pop in here and see if I can get a third-party sanity check on the idea! And some advice on where to live in the city if I do go this route. Reasons for LA: And I'd like to develop friendships with fellow creative types, who aren't quite so common in Chicago (more of an academia sort of community for people in their 20s here). Also, my parents retired in Phoenix, and it would be good to live much closer to them. Finally, I'm a writer and producer in new media. I would like to make some connections with people in the video production end of that industry, beyond the editorial and technical connections I already have, with the aim to start a web network that features video content alongside the kind of stuff I already do. So I'd want to be near the sorts of people who produce that sort of stuff to possibly work with them or contract them. I've only been to Los Angeles very briefly, about eight years ago, and it was a very touristy visit. Never saw the real city at all, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect. Spent time in San Francisco and San Diego though -- disliked the former, the latter was nice but a little boring. I've done a lot of reading about LA, and people mostly just seem to complain about how horrible the traffic is for commuting, but I work from home so that doesn't bother me so much. I don't need a lot of space, but I'm done living in slum/ghetto-type dumps with run-down buildings and loud neighbors. 1BR would be ideal but I would rather live in a studio in a nice, culturally exciting neighborhood than a 1BR in a mediocre one. I make just over 50k right now. I could spend as much as $1,500/month, but would prefer to keep it closer to $1,000. What are my options, as far as neighborhoods go? I've read about a few of them but the city is so vast I can't possibly understand everything about them all. So far Studio City sounds like the optimal balance -- West Hollywood is too expensive, and a lot of other places I look into look too trashy, or are out in the boring suburban wilderness. I've looked at apartment listings in Studio City and it seems to be on the pricey end but feasible -- is that accurate? And does anyone have any other recommendations or advice? Lastly, would I be a cultural match? I'm a fairly indoorsy sort of guy, but a very creative type with a business bent. My interests include cinema, literature, art (painting and sculpture), television, video games -- media in general, both new and old. Also politics, philosophy, etc. Ideal Saturday would be haunting a museum, then going to see a good foreign flick, then go to something kind of interesting like a burlesque show or a downtempo electronica gig. Employment in the Chicago Area? (Not IN Chicago!)? So many web sights are quick-scheme, get rich quick web sights that list "potential" employment. However, after sorting thru them and many web sights, many are links to someone or some company asking for money on how to work from home on the computer. They say things like "Make $5000 a day answering emails" or something similar. The real jobs seem to be one in 1,000's of web listings. Is there a way to filter these out of a web job search? How do I search and find employment in areas say within 5 to at MOST 15 miles from where I live? With the price of gas, driving far is nopt worth the pay some employers want to give us. I'm tired of the job finders, careers.com, job builders. Where are the best ways to get real job info, not all of this, what I call spam? I get all sorts of emails from many of these. I opted out of many at the bottom of the emails, yet it seems like this only makes me get more spammers with "Send money today" schemers that are not actual employers or employment listings. I'll tell you, there is a lot of trash on the internet in search findings that is not what we are searching for. I don't blame yahoo, google search, or any sights. How can they cpmtrol what people put on the internet? I think they can't. That's what makes job hunting so difficult. I know jobs are out there for anyone for any rate of pay doing any kinds of work. Sorting thru this trash is what is cluttering up the internet. IT used to be fun doing a search and getting exactly what we are looking for by topic. Prosecutors charged 12 people in alleged scheme to employ illegal immigrants in 14 states By Associated Press 3:10 PM PDT, May 27, 2009 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Twelve people — eight of them from Uzbekistan — are accused in a federal indictment of luring illegal immigrants to the U.S. to work as "modern-day slaves" in 14 states. Prosecutors announced Wednesday that a federal grand jury in Kansas City issued a 45-count indictment May 6 under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act that included charges of labor racketeering, forced labor trafficking and immigration violations. Matt Whitworth, acting U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri, said Wednesday that the defendants used false information to obtain fake work visas for the foreign workers, who were then threatened with deportation while living in substandard apartments and working for inadequate pay. The indictment says the conspiracy involved fraudulent labor leasing contracts in Missouri, Kansas, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, South Carolina and Wyoming. Eight of the 12 defendants were arrested Tuesday, when the indictment was unsealed. They made their first court appearances in the states where they were arrested and are being held in federal custody until they are brought to Kansas City, said Don Ledford, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office. The scheme ensnared hundreds of illegal immigrants who worked at hotels, construction sites, and in other businesses, many of them in the Kansas City area and in the southwest Missouri resort town of Branson, Whitworth said. "The indictment alleges that this criminal enterprise lured victims to the United States under the guise of legitimate jobs and a better life, only to treat them as modern-day slaves under the threat of deportation," said James Gibbons, acting special agent in charge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement based in Chicago. The employees allegedly were required to pay exorbitant rent to live in barely furnished apartments that "ensured that the workers did not make enough to repay their debt, purchase a plane ticket home or pay their own living expenses while in the United States," according to Whitworth. The workers also allegedly had to pay for transportation to their jobs, uniform fees and other fees that, combined with low pay or lack of work, often left them with paychecks that had negative earnings, prosecutors said. They were threatened with physical harm, deportation or other legal problems if they did not comply. The scheme also controlled the workers by not allowing them to receive mail, prosecutors said. The companies indicted were Kansas City labor leasing company Giant Labor Solutions; Crystal Management, Inc., headquartered in Mission, Kan.; and Five Star Cleaning, headquartered in Overland Park, Kan. Court records did not list lawyers for any of the defendants, and Ledford said the U.S. attorney's office was not sure if any of them had hired lawyers. A telephone mailbox at a number of Giant Labor Solutions was full and could not accept messages Wednesday. No phone listings were found for Crystal Management or Five Star Cleaning.
