  1. Go to Career Builder on Chicago Tribune.com . Click on "Jobs' on the top banner. Or get hold of the Sunday edition of Chicago tribune for the Jobs section. Cheap places to live in Chicago suburbs are Joliet, Cresthill, Blue Island, Markham, Harvey, Aurora. In the city, cheap neighborhoods are Rogers Park, Marquette Park, Garfield Park, Midway, Dunning.
  2. Well it's not so much the areas then it is the fields. Healthcare, engineering, computer tech/MIS etc... Affordable suburbs that have train access to the city include Midlothian, New Lenox, Oak Forest, and Matteson which are all in the SW suburbs. You tend to get more for you money out there. Not sure if you are willing to live in the city being from the south and all, but if you do know that you may be able to find some good deals in these pretty safe neighborhoods: the far northwest side, south loop, and roscoe village areas.
  3. I would live in the suburbs. Chicago has probably the worst education system in the country behind New Orleans and unless you have about $6000 per kid per year for Catholic school or private school you dont want your kids going to public school. Beverly Neighborhood and Mt Greenwood are where most white city workers live, its mostly cops and fireman, a lot of irish people and its actually neighborhoods with hosues as opposed to apartments and condos. Its relatively affordable. Also, keep in mind Chicago has an 11% sales tax on everything plus additional taxes on bottled water, pop, and luxury taxes on most fun entertainment things you would do, plus prices are higher on everything. People int eh city go to the burbs to do their grocery shopping. Plus parking meters now cost 24 quarters and buying a spot is like $200 extra a month at the minimum if you live in an apt. If you live in the burbs there will be better schools, more places for rent, generally safer, cheaper, less taxes, plus your only a 30 minute or less metra ride from Chicago if thats where you work.
